Benchmarks that Inform How a Student Chooses a School

man pointing to yes, no, maybe buttons

When faced with choosing between two institutions, how does a student make the decision about which college or university to attend? It’s a combination of factors, according to a new report from Eduventures, the research arm of NRCCUA. Understanding those factors, according to the report, can help schools better prepare for changes in levels of student interest and influence the outcomes.

Researcher Kim Reid, an Eduventures principal analyst and author of the report, used data on nearly 76,000 students drawn from the company’s “2018 Survey of Admitted Students.” Each student had to make an enrollment choice between at least two schools and provided information and ratings about their ultimate enrollment choice and the next one in line. That analysis allowed Reid to produce an institution-level dataset with 151,676 sets of ratings for 1,383 four-year public and private nonprofit schools. (For-profits were left out of the analysis.)

U Wyoming Spurs Blockchain Development with Hackathon ‘Stampede’ — Campus Technology

David Brodosi higheredFor the second year, the University of Wyoming has hosted a multi-challenge hackathon focused on blockchain. The “Blockchain Stampede,” part of the university’s College of Engineering and Applied Science WyoHackathon, is intended to help highlight the state’s commitment to blockchain technology.

During the 2018-2019 legislative session, the state passed 13 separate blockchain bills, covering property rights, banking services, authorized custodians for digital assets and setup of “sandboxes” for financial innovators. Shortly after, state officials reported that 200 new companies had registered in Wyoming with names indicating their involvement in blockchain technology. Various blockchain courses have been introduced at the university, and its money-raising foundation is among the first to accept donations in bitcoin.

Supporting Underprepared Students in the Online Classroom

David BrodosiEngaging students through a computer screen requires a unique approach to pedagogy and innovative course design.  The feeling of “getting it right” typically involves a good deal of testing and modification given the wide array of design formats and technology tools available, not to mention the varying needs of students, many of whom are underprepared for online learning (Bettinger & Loeb, 2017).

Common Student Challenges

In online courses, certain student challenges tend to come up time and again, which disrupts learning or impedes completing coursework on time. Some of these behavior profiles include:

  • Ghosting, students who disappear entirely or who don’t reach out to the instructor, even when they are performing poorly
  • Students for whom everything is seemingly negotiable, including due dates
  • Students who wait until the last minute to complete assignments, noticeably jeopardizing the quality of their work
  • Those with a post-deadline emergency who contact their instructors with an excuse for a late assignment after the deadline
  • Freeriders, or students who ride in the wake of their hard-working teammates, contributing as little as possible to the group effort

Many of these problems are widespread; indeed, several of these issues align with the pattern of online student personality types described by Judy (2018).

Connecting Students From Around The World With Virtual Exchanges

David Brodosi In a time when headlines are dominated by stories of how tech is stoking division, I find myself looking instances of how the internet can bring humanity closer together. I was at the Aspen Ideas Festival conference over the Summer and ran into a program that was refreshingly positive. The Stevens Initiative is a modern upgrade of student exchange programs, using the web to bridge students from across the world.

Engaging Faculty with New Tech — Campus Technology

David Brodosi classroom How can college and universities encourage faculty to use new technologies in their teaching? We talked with Julin Sharp, assistant vice president for information technology at Marist College, about her institution’s efforts to engage faculty with innovative tools and pedagogies.

Among Sharp’s responsibilities is leading Marist’s Digital Education group, a centralized team that works with faculty across the college to support technology-enabled teaching and learning. The department’s stated mission is as follows:

“Digital Education is committed to leading the promotion, infusion, and support of technology-facilitated pedagogical innovation. This innovation is designed to aid faculty in enriching student learning experiences as a means to develop the intellect, character, and skills required for enlightened, ethical, and productive lives in the global community of the 21st century.

Online Professional Development: 3 Ways to Keep Faculty Coming Back for More — Campus Technology

David Brodosi highered Students are back in class, but colleges and universities face another challenge: how to get faculty to come back to class – as students.

The faculty development unit of Penn State World Campus was created in 2008 with the goal of getting faculty members to take the one and only course we offered at the time: Essentials of Online Teaching, or OL 2000.

But as Penn State’s online offerings have expanded over the years, our faculty development goals have also evolved – from a “one-and-done” approach to a new mission of career-long professional development.

Google launches tool to combat plagiarism — Observatory of Educational Innovation

David BrodosiGoogle for Education announced the launch of a new tool to promote students’ originality on homework and projects — which looks more like an anti-plagiarism initiative.

The tool, called “Originality Reports,” a new feature included in Google Classroom’s Assignments platform, aims to make grading and feedback processes more efficient for teachers and promote best practices in students when referencing the work of others.

A tool against plagiarism

Google knows that teachers use their search engine to uncover cheating. This common practice involves copying and pasting phrases from students’ homework, and the results reveal possible dishonesty situations. This new tool automates this procedure by comparing students’ writings with databases of billions of web pages and millions of books.

IQ tests and their validity in the 21st-century — Observatory of Educational Innovation

David BrodosiWe live in a culture that sees intelligence as part of a person’s value. Smart people get into the best schools, obtain the best jobs, receive the highest salaries, are the leaders, the examples everyone else should follow. If you are the smartest person of a designated group, it is normal that people follow you and that a lot of doors open for you, figuratively. Being smart is a crucial component of success, but… do we measure it correctly?

IQ tests are a fundamental tool to measure student intellectual capacity. We consider them mathematically and scientifically precise, but are they really that? Or are we purposely blinding ourselves to the cultural contexts that power the biases behind the very concept of the intelligence quotient and the tests we use to measure it?
