Active Learning Spaces: Lessons Learned in the United States

Lesson 1: Put Students at the Center

One important lesson confirmed at the ELI Annual Meeting is that the student experience must form the starting point for innovating classrooms. During the conference, Liv Gjestvang (Ohio State University) and Jennifer Sparrow (Pennsylvania State University) outlined the three most important qualities demanded of current students in relation to the ever-changing labor market:

  • Students must think creatively and divergently.
  • Students must possess digital literacy.
  • Students must have the social skills to function well in teams in different cultural settings.1

To develop these skills, 21st-century students benefit greatly from active learning. As is perhaps expected, they are the target group, with the highest usage of educational spaces. It is therefore important to create educational spaces where students can develop creativity and learn from each other through active education. The active learning space provides students with variation and flexibility in educational modes. Instead of just listening passively to the instructor, they can be more actively involved in discussions, projects, and the lecture itself, which generates more in-class energy and shifts the overall dynamic from teacher-centered to student-centered. During our visit to the University of California–Irvine (UCI) campus, a representative reported that students even use the available active learning classrooms outside of scheduled lectures.

Many institutions give students the opportunity to provide input on learning spaces. For example, McGill University prepared its work plan with five principles for the design and implementation of learning spaces based on the National Student Survey for Student Engagement, a survey of students from 1,450 US institutions.2 Including students in the planning stages, as well as in the implementation of, active learning spaces also helps to ensure that these spaces match students’ goals and needs, which further influences academic impact.

If schools were wondering whether student success tools are worth the investment, a survey among students by Educause has put the question to rest. Students rated degree audit tools that show the degree requirements completed as the most useful (ranked by 80 percent of respondents as “very” or “extremely” useful). That was followed by degree planning or mapping applications, which identify courses still needed to complete a degree (77 percent); self-service utilities for conducting student-related business (74 percent); self-service programs for tracking credits, credit transfers and dual enrollment (71 percent); and early-alert systems for flagging possible academic trouble as soon as it surfaces (about 55 percent). In fact, across the board, every category of student success tool saw at least incremental gains year over year, some by more than 10 percentage points.

Preparing Faculty for HQ Online Programs

At a large urban institution in the heart of North Philadelphia, Temple University’s College of Public Health faced a contemporary problem: How can we keep up with the student demand for high-quality online programs if our faculty aren’t ready? There’s a simple answer: We can’t! So we decided to get our faculty ready and give them the tools to be successful in the online space, whether it’s their first class or their fourteenth. Here’s how we did it.

Scaling Up Online

Like other institutions, we’ve experienced a steady uptick in the number of faculty delivering courses online. Temple’s College of Public Health alone has seen a more than 50 percent increase in online classes within three years, partially due to the creation of seven new fully online graduate programs. With the explosion of new online courses came the need for faculty trained to teach in the traditional classroom to adapt their methods and styles to the online environment.

InFocus exiting digital projector business

WAIT WHAT???

As someone in the AV/IT higher education world for over 25 years, this is so hard to believe!  Going back to when InFocus purchased ASK Proxima, I have been a big fan of InFocus and their projectors.  At one point in my career, I attempted to try another manufacturer, but after three years and a 90% failure rate, I ended up reinstalling the older InFocus projectors we replaced.

This is a very sad day, very sad!

InFocus Corp., once among Oregon’s largest companies, is laying off employees and dropping out of the digital projector business altogether, according to a report this week from the online news site rAVe.

In a brief statement, InFocus President Randy Arnold said the Tigard company “is pivoting its strategic business model which has resulted in a worldwide workforce reduction this week.” Arnold did not immediately respond to a phone call seeking details of the new strategy or the scale of the layoffs.

Zoom, Echo Frames, Spatial, Magic Leap, Web Meetings, and Synchronous Online Learning

Why face-to-face meetings are still sometimes what is needed, and what this may tell us about the future of online education.

This week, I had one of those uncomfortable realizations that cause me to question my ability to make sense of the world. My latest revelation that everybody else already knows – and which I seem to be the last to grasp – is that sometimes face-to-face discussions are better than online meetings.

That’s right. I had an experience this week where an in-person meeting was superior to a discussion on Zoom.

It turns out that some discussions are better held in a shared physical location. Zoom is still not able to capture the subtleties of body language or substitute for the interpersonal bonding that comes with meeting face-to-face.

High fidelity collaboration, particularly among humans who don’t yet know each other, seems to require more bandwidth than even the most crystal clear of video and audio feeds.

Does this mean that we will be consigned to a lifetime of travel by airplane, train, bus, or car to attend face-to-face meetings?

As an online learning evangelist, how worried should I be about the seemingly insurmountable advantage that geographic co-existence seems to enjoy over collaboration at a distance?

In this same week that I was having my uncomfortable realization that some collaborations are poorly optimized for distance, Amazon decided to release the Echo Frames.
