Survey: More than Half of Faculty Believe Classroom Tech Increases Student Engagement — Campus Technology

David Brodosi classroom In a recent survey, 54 percent of faculty respondents said they believe adding more technology to their classroom would definitely increase student engagement. And another 35 percent felt adding more tech could possibly do so. The survey, conducted by Censuswide on behalf of learning management company D2L, polled 500 university professors across the United States on their use of technology, students’ expectations, institutional support for tech and more.

Overall, 92 percent of faculty said their adoption of technology was on par with or ahead of the curve compared to other educators at similar institutions. Male respondents were significantly more confident in their technology use than females, with 49 percent of men considering themselves ahead of the curve compared with 39 percent of women. Google launches tool to combat plagiarism — Observatory of Educational Innovation

David BrodosiGoogle for Education announced the launch of a new tool to promote students’ originality on homework and projects — which looks more like an anti-plagiarism initiative.

The tool, called “Originality Reports,” a new feature included in Google Classroom’s Assignments platform, aims to make grading and feedback processes more efficient for teachers and promote best practices in students when referencing the work of others.

A tool against plagiarism

Google knows that teachers use their search engine to uncover cheating. This common practice involves copying and pasting phrases from students’ homework, and the results reveal possible dishonesty situations. This new tool automates this procedure by comparing students’ writings with databases of billions of web pages and millions of books.

New Grading, Plagiarism Detection Tool

David Brodosi This week, Google introduced Assignments, a revamp of its Course Kit toolkit (in beta last year), designed to streamline the process of collecting and grading student work.

  • Instructors can assign files and automatically send each student a copy;
  • Instructors and students can attach a variety of files to assignments, including Docs or Word files, spreadsheets, presentation slides, digital portfolios, Colab notebooks and more;
  • Any file type can be reviewed without leaving the grading interface;
  • Instructors can use Google Docs to comment and leave suggestions on student work, and grading work is automatically saved; and
  • A comment bank allows instructors to repeat the same feedback for multiple students.

More College Students Are Downloading Course Materials for Free—Or Skipping Them Entirely

Use of free course materials among college students is up, with 22 percent downloading at least one such resource during the spring 2019 semester, according to research published Wednesday by the National Association of College Stores.

That’s an all-time high, and a big increase since the fall of 2015, when only 3 percent of students reported downloading free course materials. The percent of students who reported downloading free materials has increased each semester since. That figure includes texts procured legally, like open educational resources (known as OER), and illegally, such as pirated files shared through torrent websites. The most recent data NACS has on the latter behavior is from the fall of 2017, when 4 percent of respondents reported obtaining materials through illegal downloads.
