Transforming STEM Education from a Noun to a Verb, Part One | Tech & Learning

Let’s take a moment and investigate the STEM acronym, after-all it is being used quite a bit across the United States and the world. Often we hear the content areas; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math as being the basis of STEM. While this is a wonderful collection of nouns that can be used to put together a cross-curricular, transdisciplinary, or project based learning unit of study; it seems to leave out many of the other disciplines through this content definition. By focusing just on these four areas we are losing the powerful and authentic learning opportunities that STEM thinking can bring to the classroom.  In fact, we are also leaving some of the most important teachers from other subject areas  out of the equation, or the limited definition does not make them feel a part of an exciting possibility!  Perhaps that is why we see schools and districts adopting STEAM (infuse the arts), and STREAM (add on some Reading. As we see these new models perhaps we should turn it into STREAMIE (include everyone), from there we can go to STREAMIER and STREAMIEST! Better yet, how about STREAMING… wow… it’s a verb! While the idea could make everyone smile, let’s take a look at what STEM might and could actually look like if we facilitated and promoted and all-inclusive subject area model.

Benchmarks that Inform How a Student Chooses a School

When faced with choosing between two institutions, how does a student make the decision about which college or university to attend? It’s a combination of factors, according to a new report from Eduventures, the research arm of NRCCUA. Understanding those factors, according to the report, can help schools better prepare for changes in levels of student interest and influence the outcomes.

Researcher Kim Reid, an Eduventures principal analyst and author of the report, used data on nearly 76,000 students drawn from the company’s “2018 Survey of Admitted Students.” Each student had to make an enrollment choice between at least two schools and provided information and ratings about their ultimate enrollment choice and the next one in line. That analysis allowed Reid to produce an institution-level dataset with 151,676 sets of ratings for 1,383 four-year public and private nonprofit schools. (For-profits were left out of the analysis.)

U Wyoming Spurs Blockchain Development with Hackathon ‘Stampede’ — Campus Technology

David Brodosi higheredFor the second year, the University of Wyoming has hosted a multi-challenge hackathon focused on blockchain. The “Blockchain Stampede,” part of the university’s College of Engineering and Applied Science WyoHackathon, is intended to help highlight the state’s commitment to blockchain technology.

During the 2018-2019 legislative session, the state passed 13 separate blockchain bills, covering property rights, banking services, authorized custodians for digital assets and setup of “sandboxes” for financial innovators. Shortly after, state officials reported that 200 new companies had registered in Wyoming with names indicating their involvement in blockchain technology. Various blockchain courses have been introduced at the university, and its money-raising foundation is among the first to accept donations in bitcoin.

UCI Launches 2-Year Study on Value of College Education — Campus Technology

David Brodosi highered higher education The University of California, Irvine has begun tracking, surveying and analyzing of a group of undergraduate students to better understand their experiences inside and outside the college. Along the way, the researchers involved in the two-year project will be creating tools that other institutions may use to assess the student experiences at their own campuses.

Survey: More than Half of Faculty Believe Classroom Tech Increases Student Engagement — Campus Technology

David Brodosi classroom In a recent survey, 54 percent of faculty respondents said they believe adding more technology to their classroom would definitely increase student engagement. And another 35 percent felt adding more tech could possibly do so. The survey, conducted by Censuswide on behalf of learning management company D2L, polled 500 university professors across the United States on their use of technology, students’ expectations, institutional support for tech and more.

Overall, 92 percent of faculty said their adoption of technology was on par with or ahead of the curve compared to other educators at similar institutions. Male respondents were significantly more confident in their technology use than females, with 49 percent of men considering themselves ahead of the curve compared with 39 percent of women. Yet when asked about six specific uses of technology for teaching, women reported more technology use than men in nearly every category: communicating with
