InFocus exiting digital projector business

WAIT WHAT???

As someone in the AV/IT higher education world for over 25 years, this is so hard to believe!  Going back to when InFocus purchased ASK Proxima, I have been a big fan of InFocus and their projectors.  At one point in my career, I attempted to try another manufacturer, but after three years and a 90% failure rate, I ended up reinstalling the older InFocus projectors we replaced.

This is a very sad day, very sad!

InFocus Corp., once among Oregon’s largest companies, is laying off employees and dropping out of the digital projector business altogether, according to a report this week from the online news site rAVe.

In a brief statement, InFocus President Randy Arnold said the Tigard company “is pivoting its strategic business model which has resulted in a worldwide workforce reduction this week.” Arnold did not immediately respond to a phone call seeking details of the new strategy or the scale of the layoffs.

Transforming STEM Education from a Noun to a Verb, Part One | Tech & Learning

Let’s take a moment and investigate the STEM acronym, after-all it is being used quite a bit across the United States and the world. Often we hear the content areas; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math as being the basis of STEM. While this is a wonderful collection of nouns that can be used to put together a cross-curricular, transdisciplinary, or project based learning unit of study; it seems to leave out many of the other disciplines through this content definition. By focusing just on these four areas we are losing the powerful and authentic learning opportunities that STEM thinking can bring to the classroom.  In fact, we are also leaving some of the most important teachers from other subject areas  out of the equation, or the limited definition does not make them feel a part of an exciting possibility!  Perhaps that is why we see schools and districts adopting STEAM (infuse the arts), and STREAM (add on some Reading. As we see these new models perhaps we should turn it into STREAMIE (include everyone), from there we can go to STREAMIER and STREAMIEST! Better yet, how about STREAMING… wow… it’s a verb! While the idea could make everyone smile, let’s take a look at what STEM might and could actually look like if we facilitated and promoted and all-inclusive subject area model.

AR And VR In The Utility Sector

David Brodosi photography AR VR photoThe energy and utility sectors have been slow adopters of advanced technologies as there’s always been reliance on traditional methods to carry out work procedures. Also, the implementation of any technology involves a large sum of capital investment, which may not be feasible for every utility company. As the power and utility sectors are starting to realize the benefits of using advanced technologies in operations companies are adopting technologies to improve operational efficiency and serve customers better. The use of virtual reality and augmented reality in the utility field have the potential to minimize operational costs, improve safety, and broaden the types of services provided in these industries.

U Wyoming Spurs Blockchain Development with Hackathon ‘Stampede’ — Campus Technology

David Brodosi higheredFor the second year, the University of Wyoming has hosted a multi-challenge hackathon focused on blockchain. The “Blockchain Stampede,” part of the university’s College of Engineering and Applied Science WyoHackathon, is intended to help highlight the state’s commitment to blockchain technology.

During the 2018-2019 legislative session, the state passed 13 separate blockchain bills, covering property rights, banking services, authorized custodians for digital assets and setup of “sandboxes” for financial innovators. Shortly after, state officials reported that 200 new companies had registered in Wyoming with names indicating their involvement in blockchain technology. Various blockchain courses have been introduced at the university, and its money-raising foundation is among the first to accept donations in bitcoin.

GREAT BIG STORY – Website

GREAT BIG STORY

greatbigstory.com

Great Big Story’s mission statement reads as follows: “We believe there is magic in the world and it’s our mission in life to help you discover it. We search for stories showing a sense of optimism for the world…because goodness can grow through the smallest cracks in the sidewalk.”

How they help us discover the world’s magic is through video: short, professionally produced videos about people and phenomena all over the world, stories that will pique your curiosity and give you the sense of wonder about the world. Videos can be browsed by themes like Human Condition, Planet Earth, and Flavors (yep, all about food), or in curated playlists. There’s one on being a travel writer, one about a people in the great outdoors, and one on the accidental invention of the best snack food ever.

Video is becoming a well-respected form of “text” that can be consumed and analyzed as deeply as any print text, so collections like these should become a part of your school’s library of options for classroom materials. One word of warning: Although the content on the site has been rated safe for all audiences on YouTube and Facebook, the videos on Great Big Story were not made specifically for a student audience, and some material will not be appropriate for younger viewers. Teachers should preview videos before sharing them with students.

Supporting Underprepared Students in the Online Classroom

David BrodosiEngaging students through a computer screen requires a unique approach to pedagogy and innovative course design.  The feeling of “getting it right” typically involves a good deal of testing and modification given the wide array of design formats and technology tools available, not to mention the varying needs of students, many of whom are underprepared for online learning (Bettinger & Loeb, 2017).

Common Student Challenges

In online courses, certain student challenges tend to come up time and again, which disrupts learning or impedes completing coursework on time. Some of these behavior profiles include:

  • Ghosting, students who disappear entirely or who don’t reach out to the instructor, even when they are performing poorly
  • Students for whom everything is seemingly negotiable, including due dates
  • Students who wait until the last minute to complete assignments, noticeably jeopardizing the quality of their work
  • Those with a post-deadline emergency who contact their instructors with an excuse for a late assignment after the deadline
  • Freeriders, or students who ride in the wake of their hard-working teammates, contributing as little as possible to the group effort

Many of these problems are widespread; indeed, several of these issues align with the pattern of online student personality types described by Judy (2018).

Connecting Students From Around The World With Virtual Exchanges

David Brodosi In a time when headlines are dominated by stories of how tech is stoking division, I find myself looking instances of how the internet can bring humanity closer together. I was at the Aspen Ideas Festival conference over the Summer and ran into a program that was refreshingly positive. The Stevens Initiative is a modern upgrade of student exchange programs, using the web to bridge students from across the world.

Extron and Panopto Streamline Video Capture

David Brodosi Extron and PanoptoPRNewswire/ — Extron, the leader in integrated AV solutions, and Panopto, the leading enterprise video platform provider, today announced a strategic partnership to seamlessly integrate Extron’s configurable AV control systems with Panopto’s media capture software and video content management system.

For businesses and universities, the partnership will dramatically simplify the recording and management of presentations, lectures, and events. Starting today, Extron is making available certified drivers for its in-room control systems, which now integrate with Panopto’s video capture software, enabling presenters to start and stop Panopto-compatible remote recorders with a single click. Second, in the coming months, Extron’s SMP (Streaming Media Processors) will also be directly integrated with Panopto, enabling ad hoc and scheduled video streaming from SMP products through the Panopto video content management system. The integration will support live, scheduled and on-demand publishing workflows.

“This is a very exciting time as Extron integrates solutions from our uniquely broad AV product portfolio with Panopto’s powerful enterprise video streaming platform to provide robust turn-key video solutions for the modern classroom and meeting space,” says Casey Hall, Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for Extron. “Whether it be simple push-button control to hands-off, fully-automated streaming and recording for any environment, we are jointly taking media capture and management to a new level of simplicity for the industry.”
