U Wyoming Spurs Blockchain Development with Hackathon ‘Stampede’ — Campus Technology

David Brodosi higheredFor the second year, the University of Wyoming has hosted a multi-challenge hackathon focused on blockchain. The “Blockchain Stampede,” part of the university’s College of Engineering and Applied Science WyoHackathon, is intended to help highlight the state’s commitment to blockchain technology.

During the 2018-2019 legislative session, the state passed 13 separate blockchain bills, covering property rights, banking services, authorized custodians for digital assets and setup of “sandboxes” for financial innovators. Shortly after, state officials reported that 200 new companies had registered in Wyoming with names indicating their involvement in blockchain technology. Various blockchain courses have been introduced at the university, and its money-raising foundation is among the first to accept donations in bitcoin.

UCI Launches 2-Year Study on Value of College Education — Campus Technology

David Brodosi highered higher education The University of California, Irvine has begun tracking, surveying and analyzing of a group of undergraduate students to better understand their experiences inside and outside the college. Along the way, the researchers involved in the two-year project will be creating tools that other institutions may use to assess the student experiences at their own campuses.

Survey: More than Half of Faculty Believe Classroom Tech Increases Student Engagement — Campus Technology

David Brodosi classroom In a recent survey, 54 percent of faculty respondents said they believe adding more technology to their classroom would definitely increase student engagement. And another 35 percent felt adding more tech could possibly do so. The survey, conducted by Censuswide on behalf of learning management company D2L, polled 500 university professors across the United States on their use of technology, students’ expectations, institutional support for tech and more.

Overall, 92 percent of faculty said their adoption of technology was on par with or ahead of the curve compared to other educators at similar institutions. Male respondents were significantly more confident in their technology use than females, with 49 percent of men considering themselves ahead of the curve compared with 39 percent of women. Yet when asked about six specific uses of technology for teaching, women reported more technology use than men in nearly every category: communicating with

How Personalized Support and a Culture of Data Can Jumpstart Student Success — Campus Technology

David Brodosi USFSPThe University of South Florida has had formal programs to improve graduation and student success rates for a decade. The institution launched a Student Success Task Force in 2009, and was able to raise six-year graduation rates from 48 percent to 68 percent in 2014. But those gains plateaued two points shy of the state of Florida’s benchmark to measure excellence in student success.

So in 2014, the university was looking for a way to jumpstart its student success efforts and continue improving student completion rates. For one thing, it formed a partnership with Civitas Learning to use the company’s predictive analytics platform to better understand students’ needs and enable more precise, effective student support. At the same time, the university created a Persistence Committee that developed a case management approach to addressing students at risk of leaving school. Study: Remote Attendance Shrinks Absenteeism — Campus Technology

Making videoconferencing available to students who can’t attend class in person can improve attendance and student satisfaction, according to a two-year project that took place at Indiana University. In fact, absenteeism dropped by more than half.

As described in a paper about the experiment, the university used software that allowed students to call in to lectures via a browser, using a web-based videoconferencing platform from Pexip. Students who participated remotely could see dual views of the instructor and classmates, delivered via two cameras facing in opposite directions. Drop-down microphones attached to the ceiling enabled the remote students to hear the instructor and any student speaking in the class. A high-definition screen-sharing feature let them view whatever was being projected in class. And the instructor could see the remote students, who could speak in real time and be heard through classroom speakers. For team work, the remote students could be isolated from those in the classroom to allow them to collaborate, including talking to each other and sharing notes, without disrupting student teams physically present in the classroom doing the same.
