Write OR Listen, not Both (re: Note-taking) Developing Effective Digital Learning Content

I have been working with faculty for some time now try to move them away for a whiteboard to a document camera.  This does two things; turns the faculty member around so that their backs are not to the students and second the paper they use under the document camera can be digitized and sent to the students.  Now instead if copy down what’s on the board and taking note referencing the content, they can simply concentrate on notes and listening to the faculty member. As Kelly mentioned in the article below,  students have issues listening and taking notes, imagine also trying to copy content from the board?

Also: Write OR Listen, not Both (re: Note-taking)

This weekend I listened to Vicki Davis‘ podcast with Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath, “Neuroscience Research: 5 Ways To Superior Teaching”. I agree with Vicki (a.k.a. Cool Cat Teacher) – this is essential listening for every teacher (and it’s only about 15 minutes long).

Classroom Tech Increases Student Engagement

“In a recent survey, 54 percent of faculty respondents said they believe adding more technology to their classroom would definitely increase student engagement.”—Source: Campus Technology

WHY THIS MATTERS:

A majority of faculty see the value of tech in the classroom. While that’s a win, it’s also worth noting that more than half of the respondents also felt that additional support and training would lead to more widespread faculty adoption.

Course Materials Declining!

David brodosi

For the first time in a long time, combined spending over the academic year on course materials, technology and school supplies came in under $1,000, according to a recent survey by the National Association of College Stores (NACS). And students spent less on course materials than in years past — 14 percent less than a year ago and 40 percent less than 11 years ago. Outlay for technology also shrank, from about $473 last year to $419 in the latest year, a 13 percent decrease. Students spent an average of $415 on required curriculum (an average of $45 per item) and another $527 on tech and supplies.

Can Adaptive Tech Bridge the gap for STEM Success??

photo david brodosi

The report was produced in partnership with McGraw-Hill, which produces learning products that use adaptive technology.

The process of adaptive learning involves helping students figure out where they most need support, then laying out a personalized learning path that enables them “to work until they feel confident.” The use of adaptive learning, stated report author Ashley Szofer, helps students understand “that if they put in the time, they will eventually succeed. This increases their confidence in their abilities, and students tend to move ahead more quickly once they get the sense for how technology can support them.” Szofer handles communications and partnerships at STEMconnector.

Report: Early Momentum Metrics Predict Outcomes for CC Students

I know k-12 teachers are overworked, but this starts from the bottom up.  We as a society talk about educational reform, however, each level (k-12, colleges, and universities) work in a vacuum.  Educational reform starts in kindergarten and end once a person received an undergrad degree.

Community college outcomes would be higher, according to a new study, if more students met nine “early momentum metrics.” These EMMs encompass three areas for year-one students: the pace of credit accumulation during the first semester and first year, completion of gateway courses in math and English, and persistence from fall to spring.

The findings were shared in a new brief published by the Community College Research Center. The goal of the project was to examine how well these nine measures of students’ progress in their first year predicted student completion in subsequent years.

Be ready! Ensure your are Secure!!

Photo David brodosi

Almost half of organisations in the UK are pretty sure hackers can breach their network whenever they feel like it.

This is according to a new CyberArk survey, which claims that multiple factors are compounding risk. These include, first and foremost, a general lack of awareness about the existence of privileged credentials, mostly across DevOps, robotic process automation (RPA) and the cloud.

Then, there’s also the increased investment in automation and agility, which is often followed by lagging security solutions.

The lack of privileged access security strategies for DevOps, IoT and RPA allows hackers easy access to a network, and even easier lateral movement, for the purpose of network analysis.

How they broadcasted from the moon!

This is a great read for the tech nerds out there!!

Photo David brodosi

That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

Chances are when you read that line, you heard in your mind the sound of Neil Armstrong’s voice over a crackly radio transmission. And, if you’re like me, you also saw in your head the accompanying black-and-white image of the commander sedately descending a ladder onto the radiant surface of an unknown world.

As we look back this July on the golden anniversary of the first moon landing, we commemorate more than one of mankind’s greatest achievements; we also celebrate an unprecedented moment of unity for the human race. But little mention has been made to the technological engineering that made this latter part possible.

An estimated 600 million people around the world—one-sixth of the global population in 1969—tuned in to the live broadcast of the event. In the U.S., 95 percent of households sat transfixed before their tubes as Walter Cronkite set the unforgettable scene. What on earth would the moon landing have been without its telecast?
